Claire returns from travels

Today, I returned to work after 3 1/2 amazing months adventuring around South America! The trip co-incided with 10 years working with Kelsall Steele and finance4chiropractors.

We started our trip in Rio, Brazil, visiting Iguazu Falls on the way into Argentina. From Buenos Aires we headed south to Perito Moreno, a huge advancing glacier and to the coldness of the southern most city in the world, Ushuaia.

Zig-zagging north through Argentina and Chile, hiking in the Torres del Paine National Park (Chile), wine tasting in Mendoza (Argentina) and horse riding on the Argentinean pampas were a few of the things we filled our days with!

Bolivia was the next on our list visiting the largest salt flats in the world, Salar de Uyuni, the highest capital city in the world, La Paz, and the biggest expanse of rainforest in the world, the Amazon. They were all incredible trips!

With an internal flight to Colombia, we ended our trip with just over 3 weeks to explore the colonial towns north of Bogota and relax on the Caribbean coast before flying back home to a rainy London last week!

Awesome adventures but good to be back! Look forward to speaking to you soon!

Fake Inland Revenue Emails

An email from no-reply@hmrc.gov.uk entitled Notice of Underreported Income is currently being circulated. The email links to a fake HMRC website entitled 'Fraud Application' and asks that you download and review a tax statement document. The website then opens an executable file on your machine.

The email is not from HMRC. You should be aware that opening executable files (.exe) over the internet can potentially compromise the security on your machine.

HMRC do not issue emails asking for personal details.

Do not visit the website contained within the email or disclose any personal or payment information.

If you receive an email requesting such information, please forward it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk <mailto:phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk> and then delete it.

Fixed Rates for mortgages on the Up!

Over the last 48 hours, we have seen a great number of lenders increase their shorter term (2, 3, 4 year) fixed rates.

This is due to an increase in swap rates (effectively the cost of borrowing) over the shorter term.

A word of caution, if you are considering a fixed rate at this time, the key is to act quickly

Some lenders are giving us 2 days notice, some are giving us 2 hours. There are some good deals around, but need to be taken up quickly.

We hate it us much as you do, but I am sure many of you remember you have to at least consider Form P11D every year to declare any Benefits in Kind given to employees.

In the age-old habit of moving the goal-posts and creating extra paperwork (as if we all have nothing better to do), the very useful dispensation that is granted to avoid reporting items like your GCC membership when you are in a Limited Company, is being reviewed.

This is on a case by case basis but all employers are being invited to complete Form P11DX otherwise they may consider the previous dispensation invalid.

Apparently they also do not like any round sum allowances or personal payments made on company credit cards as there could be a 'private' element to the sums involved.

Friend and client of the firm, Dr Neil Osborne, had invited us up once again to lecture to the final year students at the AECC. We are always more than happy to accept this as, for us, it is a very rewarding trip that gives us the opportunity to compliment the student's technical knowledge with a business 'heads-up' for the months ahead.

Having travelled up the day before and staying overnight at Chateau Osborne, Mike Hutchinson and myself were raised early with a king's breakfast and sent packing towards Parkwood Road. Despite the promise of a 9.30am Tax and Business lecture there were around 50 - 60 students in attendance all of whom were keen to understand the perils of the UK tax system. With the hour and a half available we did our best with the subject matter and gave them but a small insight into Taxation. Whilst students were obviously focused their exams, it also seemed very obvious to us that, given the economic climate, they were very motivated to find placements upon qualification.

I was also fortunate enough to be shown around the new clinic afterwards. It was much larger than I was expecting and already seemed busy and vibrant. From what I understand, this should now increase graduates to 100+ a year at the college. Personally, I look forward to further increased vibrancy and awareness this will bring to chiropractic in the UK.

Bank of England reduce interest rates AGAIN!

The Bank Of England have just announced a further reduction in the base rate to 1%
Aside from this being yet another record low, it is believed to be the final reduction in rates.

Whilst many mortgage holders will be rubbing their hands with glee as they move to standard variable rates, it is now essential for people to discuss their future mortgage requirements in order to capitalise on the ‘golden deals’ which will come along over the next few months.

Whilst lenders have not issued details of any future deals at this time, there is no doubt that any good product will be highly subscribed.

We already have a priority list of those clients who wish us to seek a good deal on their behalf as they seek to move from the variable rate over the next few months. HMRC error on their website for online filing (why it pays to have an accountant!)

In the papers over the weekend it has been reported that millions of people could be left out of pocket due to an online tax error on the HM Revenue and Customs website.

Those people who are self employed and filed their own tax returns online are not only being asked to pay the "back tax" for the previous year but also the full contribution towards next year known as the "payment on account". The "payment on account" is actually due in two installments, half in January and half in July however the error on the HMRC website has calculated and shown to pay the full amount now so many tax payers will be making some of their payment 6 months early.

Particularly with the ecomony as it is, having to make this early tax payment could stretch tax payers even further than they are already.

HMRC offer better interest rates than overdrafts

HMRC have been negotiating with tax payers who are stuggling to pay their tax bills. Tax payers have been able to pay over several months and at an interet rate sometimes as low as 3.5%, which is lower than most overdrafts.
