Friend and client of the firm, Dr Neil Osborne, had invited us up once again to lecture to the final year students at the AECC. We are always more than happy to accept this as, for us, it is a very rewarding trip that gives us the opportunity to compliment the student's technical knowledge with a business 'heads-up' for the months ahead.

Having travelled up the day before and staying overnight at Chateau Osborne, Mike Hutchinson and myself were raised early with a king's breakfast and sent packing towards Parkwood Road. Despite the promise of a 9.30am Tax and Business lecture there were around 50 - 60 students in attendance all of whom were keen to understand the perils of the UK tax system. With the hour and a half available we did our best with the subject matter and gave them but a small insight into Taxation. Whilst students were obviously focused their exams, it also seemed very obvious to us that, given the economic climate, they were very motivated to find placements upon qualification.

I was also fortunate enough to be shown around the new clinic afterwards. It was much larger than I was expecting and already seemed busy and vibrant. From what I understand, this should now increase graduates to 100+ a year at the college. Personally, I look forward to further increased vibrancy and awareness this will bring to chiropractic in the UK.

Ross visited the AECC on 25th June to meet with about 10 chiropractors due to graduate this summer.

The feedback we received was that they felt the workshops were useful to get advice and guidance from a professional about topics such as whether to go as self employed or employed, how much to save each month for their tax and how can profits be maximised.

Ross enjoyed meeting with the students and found many of them to be vibrant and keen to get into business after their studies!

Ross is due to visit the AECC (Anglo European College of Chiropractors) next Wednesday (25th June) to provide 15 minute one-to-one consultations on starting in business and basic tax, aimed to prepare this year's graduates a little bit for when they venture into the wide world of chiropractic practice. Students need to book a time slot between 2pm and 5pm where they can ask questions and discuss areas such as ....

? should I be self employed or employed?

? how much should I set aside for tax?

? what expenses can I claim for in self employment?

? when is the right time for me to set up a chiropractic practice of my own?

If you are a 5th year student, look out for the poster at the AECC this week and make sure you get in early to secure a suitable timeslot (although we can extend these if necessary)
